The plight of a British citizen visiting Thailand over New Year highlights the importance of having medical cover whether you are travelling abroad on holiday or living away from home for an extended period of time.
The problem with both travel and medical insurance is that it can seem a waste of money until you have the need for it. Many of our clients tell us that they are in good health and are reluctant to pay for cover but the fact is that you never know what is round the corner.
Craig Lindley, 35, appeared to be in good health when he travelled to Thailand for a friend’s wedding. However he collapsed on New Year’s Day and has since been diagnosed with a rare condition known as Guillain-Barré Syndrome which attacks the nervous system and has left him almost paralysed.
Craig’s hospitalisation and treatment has already clocked up bills of tens of thousands of pounds and it looks doubtful that he has travel insurance to cover them. Reports claim that he tried to purchase a policy via a search comparison site but, unbeknown to him, it failed to go through. That has left his already traumatised family with the unenviable task of trying to raise the money required to pay the costs already incurred and to fly him home. Repatriation on a specially equipped plane could cost up to £70,000.
Any time you travel abroad you should ensure that you are covered by a travel policy with repatriation as standard. If you’re an expat living abroad a travel policy will not cover you and you need to take out comprehensive medical insurance instead. This will guarantee you access to the best healthcare possible when you are living away from home, and cover repatriation to your home country should it ever be required.
We all hope that we will never have to claim on these policies but every day hundreds of people do. By ensuring that you are covered you can enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that in times of stress when the unpredictable happens, the financial side of things will be taken care of.
